The winning without KG checklist…
So, last show we gave you the top 10 ways for the C’s to keep winning without Kevin Garnett, after tonight’s 104-97 win over the Pacers, let’s see how many of our suggestions they actually followed:
10: keep playing the Western Conference (16-0 and counting)
o Well, 0-1 after this one
9: hold the opponent to 18% from beyond the arc, a la Minnesota on Friday
o While not quite 18%, the Celtics did hold the Pacers to 7-24 from downtown, and that’s a job well done for a team that excels from the perimeter
8: get 11 rebounds and 12 assists…from your point guard
o Again, we didn’t hit the extreme, but Rajon Rondo did pull down 7 boards and dish out 7 dimes…not to mention 12 points
7: avoid any team that has LeBron James…really this applies even with Kevin Garnett…scary playoff match up there
o No superstar power like James on the Pacers, the closest they had tonight was Danny Granger
6: do NOT play Scott Pollard…things aren’t that bad
o His line: DNP – coach’s decision
5: get a call from the refs for once!
o Personal fouls were 25-23 with the Pacers on the heavy end; the Celtics were 24-29 (83%) from the line, whereas Indiana shot 16-21 (76%)
4: get 30 points from Allen and Powe…and that’s not even Ray Allen
o 24 points between the two of these guys, 16 for Powe to go along with 9 rebounds…and just for good measure 23 points from Ray Allen
3: hold your opponent to 14 1st quarter points…a la Miami
o Actually the Celtics saved their best for last defensively, ahead by 5 going into the 4th quarter, Boston held Indiana to 20 4th quarter points to survive a final frame in which the C’s missed all but 4 of their field goal tries
2: fly under the radar because you’re still the 3rd biggest sports story in your own city
o The two biggest stories out of Boston today: Dice-K and Beckett are already in Florida, and Roger Goodell is meeting with Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) Wednesday to discuss spygate…I’d say this one is a check
1: don’t panic, you still have the best record in the league, (I think we’ve heard that one before)
o They just keep doing what they need to do to win…40-9, whodathunkit?
